7 Important Things You Should Consider Before Cash Stuffing

A few months ago, I discovered cash stuffing on YouTube. Perhaps it was the ASMR or perhaps it was the thought of building personal wealth at a time when I didn’t have much money, but something about cash stuffing really appealed to me. Over the last few months, I’ve been exploring how to do it myself. If you are planning to start cash stuffing, here are 7 important things you should consider…

What is Cash Stuffing and Why Do It?

Cash stuffing, also known as envelope stuffing, is the process of putting money (usually notes) into envelopes allocated for specific purposes, such as groceries, loan repayments, holidays, or savings goals. Many people store their envelopes neatly in A6 or A5 binders for easy organisation.

It’s a popular method for controlling over-spending because you only spend what’s in the envelopes.

The amount placed in each envelope per pay cycle can be set intentionally by the saver, or even made fun with savings games (for example, rolling dice to decide how much to put aside).

You’ll find a wide variety of cash stuffing envelopes, binders, and creative savings games on platforms like Etsy, where many small businesses design them with stylish and practical layouts.

What You Should Consider

Saving up and limiting personal spending is great, especially if you need to watch those pennies, but cash stuffing comes with a few trade-offs to keep in mind.

It often depends on your personal risk appetite, lifestyle, and whether you feel better keeping your money in the bank or in hand. So here are the important things to consider before diving in:

1. Safety

Banks are heavily regulated, with strict security measures around apps, APIs, and online transactions. However, a digital attack can come from anywhere in the world, and hackers are constantly inventing new tricks. Cash in hand, by contrast, is only at risk locally. The trade-off? While envelopes, purses, and binders feel tangible, they’re small and portable, making them easier for someone to grab and run with.

2. After-Loss

If money goes missing from your bank, fraud detection systems can sometimes catch it quickly. Banks also have the power to block suspicious payments and limit further losses. But the rise of contactless payments has made impersonation through card theft much easier. With cash stuffing, there’s no safety net. If your envelope of cash is stolen or misplaced, it’s gone!

3. Liability

In the banking world, liability often falls on the institution. If your account is compromised through no fault of your own, most banks are required under the Payment Services Regulations to refund fraudulent transactions. You’re also protected by schemes like the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), which safeguards deposits up to £85,000 if the bank itself were to fail. With cash, the liability is 100% yours. If it’s lost or stolen, there’s no safety net. That sense of responsibility can feel empowering, but it can also add stress if you’re someone who worries about losing things.

4. Accessibility

Banking apps, ATMs, and online transfers are convenient… until they’re not. Forgotten passcodes, poor connectivity, or service outages can leave you temporarily locked out of your money. Cash, on the other hand, is instantly available as long as you have it in your purse. The downside? With fewer bank branches open, withdrawing cash in the right denominations can mean an extra trip, and ATMs often don’t give you much choice in the notes you receive (plus they may add withdrawal fees).

5. Budgeting Discipline

One of the main attractions of cash stuffing is the physical boundary it creates. Once an envelope is empty, that category is done until the next pay cycle. For many people juggling household, work, and personal expenses, this can be a powerful tool for controlling overspending. Digital banking, however, can feel more “limitless” and make it easier to swipe without thinking.

6. Lifestyle Fit

Think about how you live your daily life. If you prefer online shopping, digital payments are unavoidable. Cash stuffing works best for categories like groceries, dining out, or fun money where you’re handing over bills in person. If you travel a lot, carrying envelopes of cash may feel impractical or unsafe.

7. Record-Keeping

Banks keep detailed digital records that you can review at any time. Cash stuffing requires you to track spending yourself, either by noting it down or keeping receipts. For some, this extra step builds awareness and accountability. For others, it can feel like a chore.

Alternatives to Traditional Cash Stuffing

If you’re leaning towards keeping your money in a bank account, here are a couple alternative ideas that can still give the satisfaction of cash stuffing!

  • Virtual Envelopes: Some online banking apps allow users to create virtual envelopes (or pots), which can be a great alternative to physical cash stuffing! By labelling these virtual envelopes as you would real ones, you can continue to allocate funds defined purposes . However, not all banking apps allow direct debits from pots and you should check the terms and conditions before setting these up!
  • Placeholder Cash: If you want the feeling of physical cash stuffing, another alternative is to use placeholder cash, or fake money, that represent real denominations. You can buy such bills on platforms such as Etsy.

I like to use a combination of both virtual envelopes and placeholder (fake) money. I even made my own notes/bills, which you can download for free down below!

Outro

At the end of the day, the right choice depends on how you feel most confident managing your money. Whether that’s neatly tucked into envelopes or secured in the bank, what matters most is having a system that gives you peace of mind and control.
